First day of Hanukkah marked in Budapest
The first candle for the Jewish holiday Hanukkah was lit at Budapest’s Nyugati Square on Tuesday evening.
“Hanukkah is the celebration of victory,” Slomó Köves, chief rabbi of the Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation (EMIH), said.
“At Hanukkah we celebrate the triumph of light over darkness … miracle over nature, faith over doubt and truth over lie,” he said.
Köves said this year’s Hanukkah was also meant to celebrate the victory of justice in global politics, referring to US President Donald Trump’s announcement last week that the United States would recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
